The Mama Nini Collection is a limited edition series of jewelry that have been created from the commissioned work of Drs. Karina Gonzalez and Michael Johnson. Mama Nini is the matriarch of Karina Gonzalez’s family, a fierce Dominican woman with sixteen children.
Mama Nini always had peacocks in her yard when Karina was a child growing up in the Dominican Republic. To this day Karina still loves peacocks and has chosen to decorate her and Michael’s home in these colors.
In 2022, they commissioned me to complete an 8 foot peacock inspired work for their home that resulted in a series of 12 paintings that took a full year to complete. Throughout the process, many other pieces were created and will continue to be created from their comission. Through, their philanthropic generosity, these limited edition pieces are available to purchase.
As a culmination of our shared love and belief in a strong public school education, a portion of the proceeds of every piece in this collection will be donated to PSARTS (www.psarts.com). P.S. ARTS is dedicated to advancing equity and opportunity for children and youth by providing arts education in systemically under-resourced schools and communities.
