Nadleeh
Nadleeh
Perhaps my most seminal piece …Nadleeh.
This piece was inspired by a brief documentary I watched about a Cree doctor who was working with #twospirit folx in Canada - Dr. James Makokis . I was moved by his work and also struck by the Navajo word for two-spirit "nadleeh" which translates to "ambient being". This is such a beautiful concept and something we should all strive to be, to aspire to walk in multiple worlds and have the strength and knowledge to balance them within us. In English we use so many words that make being trans negative or a problem that has to be fixed but rarely do we see it as a gift. The problem comes from the inability of the rest of the world to value trans lives. Language reflects a much deeper value system and it's time we get to the root of ours.
Because this piece was so special to me I have included pictures from its creation as well as the final product - two 20x40 pieces with turquoise negative space. Both pieces, despite their differences , are done with the exact same colors just applied in reverse order producing different but complementary images.
A note about prints:
Archival Matte Paper Print (AMP): A fine art paper, also known as Moab Lasal Photo Matte. Its an economical favorite and standard for all my prints. It features a smooth surface, heavy weight (230 g, 9.5-mil), neutral white, matte paper engineered for accurate color reproduction that provides high contrast and high-resolution output. This paper is acid-free making it archival quality.
Giclee - This is a thick (21-mil) heavy weight (310g) paper with the luxurious style of traditional artists' papers. It has a natural-white, matte finish with a textured watercolor feel.
Canvas - This is a gallery wrapped artist grade canvas print. This will come with a black backing and hardware attached and ready to hang. Its 1.25” in depth
If you want to frame one of my paintings, I would recommend the giclee or AMP. If you are a serious art collector, you can’t go wrong with the giclee. It’s classic.
If however, you want to hang something that looks like the actual painting, I highly recommend the canvas print. It’s a beautiful professional quality and the prices are often better than the paper prints.
